Our goal is to help our community by utilizing our talents in music. We want to share our love of music with the world so that other people can enjoy it as much as we do. When we brainstormed ideas, we noticed a consistent pattern of senior citizens suffering loneliness and depression in nursing homes across the United States and we decided to do something about this problem.

The elderly population continues to grow so it is likely that more people will face these problems. We put our heads together and came up with a tangible project to improve the lives of senior citizens by providing them with free access to music enrichment!

After researching the benefits of music therapy, we created Coloratura which provides music enrichment for senior citizens in nursing homes and assisted living communities. We chose for our name Coloratura which means “elaborate ornamentation of a vocal melody.” Our music enrichment programs draws inspiration from music therapy to engage participants in playful music making. We encourage our participants, regardless of their skill and experience level, to express their feelings through music. We start small to learn from participant feedback and improve our services. Over time, we hope to expand to serve multiple communities through music.

We are inspired by recent research on the potential for music to enhance our cognitive, emotional and physical health:

  1. Network Science and the Effects of Music Preference on Functional Brain Connectivity: From Beethoven to Eminem

  2. Neural responses to nostalgia-evoking music modeled by elements of dynamic musical structure and individual differences in affective traits

  3. A functional MRI study of happy and sad affective states induced by classical music

  4. Ventral tegmental area dopaminergic action in music therapy for post-traumatic stress disorder: A literature review

  5. Music and the brain
